Rubbing Alcohol Versus Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol have comparable uses, both being antiseptics and disinfectants, but they are very different substances and one may be more suitable to the other depending on the situation. The foremost difference between the two is their composition. Hydrogen peroxide is an oxidizing agent that is a liquid compound with an oxygen-oxygen bond, it is a clear liquid that is slightly more dense than water. Rubbing alcohol on the other hand is composed of 70% isopropyl alcohol and various other additives that give it a bitter taste and make it a poisonous substance. Rubbing alcohol is more volatile and dangerous than hydrogen peroxide, but both substances should be used with caution by reading the instructional labels carefully.

The main concern for users trying to decide between hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol, is which to use in the event of a wound. Hydrogen peroxide works by oxidizing, it is odorless and generally painless and will eat away at certain bacteria and fungus and especially good for treating bacteria that has infected a wound. Hydrogen peroxide is also effect at rapidly stopping capillary bleeding. Rubbing alcohol can also be used to clean wounds as it is a known disinfectant and a fast-acting one at that, but it stings and can cause irritation. Rubbing alcohol is also looked over in this type of situation as it has a harsh odor. More often than not, hydrogen peroxide will be used over rubbing alcohol for these reasons.

Other uses for hydrogen peroxide are as a bleaching agent for the purpose of combating stains, as an oxygen treatment for plants, or as an oral rinse. If using hydrogen peroxide as an oral rinse it is very important that you do not swallow the liquid. it is also important to keep hydrogen peroxide away from eyes and not to expose deep wounds to hydrogen peroxide.
Rubbing alcohol also has a wide range of household uses including de-greasing, stain treatment, cleaning mirrors, removing harsh odors, removing price tags from surfaces, and sanitizing objects. The substance, however, is volatile, highly flammable, and can cause permanent injury or death if consumed.
